In our Change It Up camp, participants create and perform a world premiere in just one week – a challenge that sparks creativity and teamwork. Those passionate about refining their theater skills, including acting, improv, and tech, will find their niche in our Skills Camps. And for those aspiring to college-level study in the performing arts, our YAPI and Mini YAPI programs offer an immersive, advanced experience. Applications are open to werewolves, vampires, sirens, gorgons, and anyone else with unnatural abilities. This is particularly good for students who have acted on stage and want to make the transition to on camera. Change It Up (Grades 6-10)

In Change It Up Camp, we’ll take a popular story or genre and change it up to make it our own. We will twist the story and the characters all under the direction of professional theater artists. Then, after rehearsing our original script, we’ll premiere it on the final day of camp for our family and friends!

Teen Camp (Grades 7-12)

We’re putting on a show! Teen musical camps are two weeks of casting, rehearsing, and performing a fully-staged musical or play. The camp also provides 7th – 12th graders a variety of focused skill-building exercises intended to improve students’ theater skills. These shows are designed so that every participant has a moment to shine!

Skills Camps (Grades 6-12)

Each Skills week at Studio East features different classes. Spend a week learning specific theater skills and show off your knowledge in an informal performance.

Mini YAPI (Grades 7-12)

Mini YAPI is a focused acting course for students who want to delve into some serious theater training. This week-long, process-based acting intensive is taught by the same Instructors who teach the Studio’s six-week Young Actors Professional Intensive (YAPI).

  • Daily Activities

    • Ensemble building and play creation activities based on a book or book series
    • Acting games, creating props, script writing, and rehearsing scenes
    • Practicing stage skills during rehearsal process

    Skills Developed

    • Theatrical skills: character creation, ensemble, improvisation and performance
    • Life skills: following directions, teamwork, confidence, and risk taking
    • Literacy skills through reading and script writing
    • Body language, gesture, facial and vocal expression

     

    Daily Activities

    • Acting games, mini-workshops, and rehearsing scenes
    • Learning lines, songs, and choreography
    • Using formal stage skills during rehearsal process
    • Scripted musical production
    • Campers have individual roles, memorized lines, and staged performance.

    Skills Developed

    • Theatrical skills: character development, ensemble, improvisation and performance
    • Musical skills: rhythm, pitch, tone, ensemble singing, and vocal production
    • Life skills: following directions, teamwork, confidence and risk taking
    • Body language, gesture, facial and vocal expression

     

    Daily Activities

    • Community building and theater games
    • Skill-building through games and exercises
    • Solo and group projects to stretch and strengthen skills

    Skills Developed

    • Skills camps are focused on building the skill in the camp title and therefore skills developed vary based on camp title.
      • Acting for the Camera will focus on film acting skills such as presence, expression, voice, memorization, and more.
      • Broadway Boot Camp will focus on musical theater skills such as acting technique, singing technique, dancing technique, and how to combine the three in performance.
      • Comedy Camp will focus on comedic skills such as performance, comedic timing, physical comedy, and improvisation.
      • Improvisation will focus on improvisational skills such as thinking on your feet, working as a team, comedic timing, and taking risks.
      • Movie-Making will focus on filmmaking skills such as screenwriting, directing, acting for the camera, and editing.
      • Tech Theater will focus on skills such as costume design, stage management, and operating a light board.
    • Life skills – listening, following directions, teamwork, and risk taking

    Serious acting students aged 13-19 are invited to audition for our summer teen program, the Young Actors Professional Intensive (YAPI), a six-week, comprehensive, college-level course of study in many aspects of the performing arts. Students will work with professional actors and instructors to develop and hone their performance skills.

    Note: The YAPI program is not part of our early bird discount.
