An Update From Studio East

A Message from Studio East Board of Directors and Interim Executive Director

Dear valued Studio East community,
We are writing to you today to make you aware of some hard but necessary changes that have occurred at the Studio this past week. Like many arts nonprofits in our region and across the country, we have to reckon with a changing landscape and the economic challenges that have accompanied that. While Studio East is proud to have navigated the difficulties of the last four years — with much owed to our community, our donors, and the City of Kirkland — we must continue to nimbly adapt to set ourselves up for another 32 years of service.

With that goal in mind, we have made the decision to eliminate four roles from our full-time staffing and begin a reorganization process. During this time, we will be utilizing consultants as well as relying on valued experts and community members to reevaluate our operational structure and programming to help us build a resilient organization ready for the challenges and triumphs the future may hold. While this is a difficult moment, it also provides a time of radical opportunity for us to rethink how we serve our mission and ensure our commitments to inclusivity and accessibility for all.

We want to be transparent: We are operating at a loss for this fiscal year, which is a driving force in these decisions. Despite these recent and short-term hardships, we continue to benefit from resources built over years of strong leadership, and we remain financially sound to continue operations uninterrupted. We believe these changes will allow us the time and space to effectively chart our new course.

As we work to restructure the organization, Artistic Director Carolyn Agan will be stepping in as Interim Executive Director. We continue our dedication to you, our students and community, and look forward to building a brighter future together.

We look forward to seeing you at the Studio.
